CATraxx is a powerful music organizer database which will help you catalog a music collection of any kind, from vinyl records to CDs to MP3s. Automatically download CD data from the Internet, or scan your hard drive for audio files. A comprehensive set a data fields enables you to keep track of a wide range of information. With CATraxx, you are in control of your music collection.

CATraxx, with its 50-album trial limit, has a modern layout but suffers from a lack of intuitive use. The best way to get started with it is to create a new database, and from there hit up the Menubar's Audio/Scan Folder option to add albums.

Once you have some albums and tracks to play with, the program gets much easier to use. There are multiple views, adjustable on the left nav, so that you can search and manage your collection however you like. The view options, from Explorer and Album to Loan and Lookup, are self-explanatory. Click on one to see the contents of that album. Clicking on a song will open your default music player and start the track.

There's a Toolbar from which all major functions can be handled, including CDDB lookup, while double-clicking on an album opens up a metatag-editing panel. A secondary toolbar lists the alphabet for generalized browsing. Beginners have some neat tricks to play with, like copying track info from one song and pasting it onto another. Power users can take advantage of more complex tools, like editing the database template. However, CATraxx is heavily reliant on the CDDB for data, and it's not easy to make batch edits. There's almost too much you can do with the app, and not enough that gets right to the heart of simple, album-wide metatag edits.

  "I actually bought this one! Easily the best."

  Pros: Easy to customize: change/add fields, input your own defaults. Faster to add records than the other programs I tried. Can export data into other formats, create your own views and printable reports. Easy to add multiple disc sets.

  Cons: No facility for adding records by bar code

  Version: CATraxx 8.11.06

  "The Best Value By Far"

  Pros: Very powerful and well written Support for media files (wma, flac, mp3, etc) in addition to physical media.

  Cons: Steep learning curve. Trial says fully functional 30 day, but no mention of 50 album limit. So it's not fully functional. This pisses some people off, myself included because it seems to be sneaky or a lie.

  "Trial version is 50 albums"

  Pros: Can import data from some other CD databases (I tried Music Collector first; didn't need to rescan CDs); easy to back up & modify entries; decent help files; can list multi-disc sets under one album title easily

  Cons: No "one-click" way to add new CDs using CDDB; so many options I have too much to learn!
