Google Calendar officially comes to Apple's iCal

Posted by Josh Lowensohn

Google on Monday formally announced full support for the CalDAV protocol along with the release of a small piece of software for Mac computers that lets users easily link up their Google Calendars with the iCal application.

Google had previously launched CalDAV support back in late July, however, consumers had to manually add their calendars directly to CalDAV-supporting applications like Mozilla Sunbird and Apple's iCal. The new Mac utility, named "Calaboration" simply lets users plug in their Google Calendar username and password to send Google calendars over to iCal. The benefit of doing this is the two-way sync. This means whatever changes you make on either end will be synced up to both every few minutes.

I gave Calaboration a spin this morning, and after restarting iCal, it worked without problems. With the current implementation you're able to see other people's schedules, as well as reply yes, no, or maybe to calendar invitations. The only problems I ran into early on were syncing errors where iCal would not let me write data to Google's servers, which was remedied with a closing and reopening of the program after the initial CalDAV setup.

You can grab Calaboration here. If you're a Sunbird user, there's a simple provider extension that does the same thing.

Calaboration lets you pick which Google Calendars you want to sync up with iCal. The same thing can be done in Mozilla's Sunbird or any other calendaring tool with CalDAV support.

Any word on native sync between Google Calender and the iphone? This would work as a hack, but it means leaving the computer at home on all the time. How they can have such tight integration with maps, search, gmail and not have anything for the calender makes no sense.

Syncing iCal and Google Calendars, or Outlook and Google Calendars, will sync your phone through mobileme.

As far as I know (prior 2.2, don't know about 2.2), there isn't a public framework to support syncing the calendar on your iPhone.

Not as I'm aware. MobileMe will sync your home computer calender/contacts with your mobileme calender/contacts and down to the iphone. But there's nothing there for syncing the google calender that I've found.

WWW.NUEVASYNC.COM - I've been using them since July 12th and they have been flawless. They sync my google calendar with my iphone calendar for free. It also does contacts. Then I use the office calendar <--> google calendar sync so i'm totally synced up.

How do we go Google Cal to iPhone? I can't use Nuevasync.com because I'm already using the iphone exchange function for email and you can only have one exchange connection.

One more step towards replacing MS Exchange with Google.

Now if only they could have the Contacts integrated the same way so I don't have to keep downloading and importing contacts into my local apps.

+1 vote for syncing Contacts from Gmail to Apple Mail, please! GCALDaemon (http://gcaldaemon.sourceforge.net/index.html) purports to do this but I've had trouble getting it to work, and of course a solution directly from Google would be preferable.

Apple's Addressbook already supports syncing contacts with Gmails contacts.

me too use Nuevasync.com - it works like a charm. However my office uses outlook but doesn't let me sync with anything, so I just send/forward every meeting request to my google eMail address and it automatically appears in my iPhones calendar (make sure to go to google settings and set to include all meeting requests). as i said works like a charm for me without mobileme which is a pain in the a...

I thought I had this all figured out. I got iCal syncing with Google Calendar and I was going to have Mobile Me sync that up to my iphone. It appears that Mobile Me doesn't sync up the Google calendars though?
