Power Downloader customizes his desktop

While Power Downloader was sifting through criminal case files recently, he received an e-mail from Kitty Kilobyte who had gone back to school. After telling him of her latest "impossible" assignments and new "amazing" friends she had made, Kitty had an interesting software request. Kitty wanted some way to make her computer stand out from the rest of her classmates. She figured, if she's the niece of a famous software superhero, it should show--perhaps even if it's just in her computer's interface.

WindowBlinds

Letting the "famous" flattery from his niece go right to his head, Power Downloader did a little extra searching at Download.com to see what he could come up with. With a little research, Power was able to find WindowBlinds. With this application installed on Kitty's computer, she would be able to change the look and feel of her desktop to fit her style. Several options for themes came with the 30-day trial that would let Kitty sample different types to see what she liked. With the full version of the program, she would be able to pick from hundreds of user-designed themes at the WinCustomize Web site. She could also create her own skins using the freely available SkinStudio. One thing Power decided he needed to note, in case Kitty shared the program with her friends at school, was that WindowBlinds required a little extra RAM to run smoothly. Her friends with slower systems might need to think twice before using this program.

At the end of his e-mail to Kitty Kilobyte, Power Downloader let her know that if she liked the program, he would pay the shareware fee so she could keep her unique themes. Hopefully, when Kitty booted up her system with a fancy theme, she would always think of her "famous" uncle, the software superhero.

I have tried those listed in the article and to different degrees have had problems with all. Though in all fairness it's been awhile perhaps they have improved.
Here's what I'm using now www.xpize.net I haven't had a problem with it, It's like new underwear for XP and it's free!
I've also had good luck with this one here www.astonshell.com/aston/ it's reliable, many skins are available for it and in some cases speeds up your computer! Good luck Kitty.;-)

Or...Beryl
by SceptreX October 6, 2007 11:23 AM PDT
Or, if you really care about being different, go ahead and slap Ubuntu on your computer. The new release comes out in a week, and it comes with Beryl built in.

What does Beryl mean? Hundreds of fan made skins, 3D effects (think Aero for Vista), a cube-like interface for your desktop (called Compiz), more animations and effects...the list goes on. One look at any Ubuntu desktop and those silly school students will wonder why they ever bothered to drop some clams to make XP or Vista look pretty when a free OS does the trick quite nicely.

Ditto on the Beryl :)

Yeah, Beryl is a great piece of software. I used it back with Ubuntu 6.10 before it was built in. Takes a bit of work depending on your hardware. Should be easy with the newest version of Ubuntu though, since, like you said, its built right in. :) Free is always good too. ;)

Ubuntu is really easy to install, so if you have never used it, don't sweat. Give it a try!

WindowBlinds on Vista
by TurtleSnapper October 9, 2007 2:24 AM PDT
I want one of those. Seriously, where do you find those superhero uncles that know what you mean at 14, and love you so much, they'll even foot the bill on the deal if you like it. I like the program and haven't noticed a drain on my system resources while using it. And yes it is very friendly running on Vista. Still, I wish I had a wize wizard in my back pocket to make me more popular. (ps, I loved the story)
