Publisher's description of Aladdin Expander 5.0 beta

From Smith Micro:

Aladdin Expander gives Windows users an easy way to expand most compressed or encoded files downloaded from online services and the Internet. Aladdin Expander expands files from the most popular archiving and compression formats, such as ZIP and the standard compression utility for the Mac, StuffIt (SIT). Aladdin Expander will also expand files in UUencoded (UUE), BinHex (HQX), and MacBinary (BIN) formats, and other archives such as ARC, ARJ, and GZ. The version 5.0 beta adds support for StuffIt 5.X archives (.sit), including self-extracting archives (.sea). It decodes MacBinary III encoded files--the new format utilized by Mac OS 8.5. It also offers Unicode support, which is helpful for cross-platform, multilingual file access.

  • "Why let Mac users have all the fun?"
Giving WinZip a run for its money, StuffIt Standard offers effortless file compression and encryption for any type of file. It matches WinZip in several features, including archived password protection, right-click compression, and a gallery of easy-to-use wizards. The utility also comes with a few unique features, including a robust search tool that locates files by date, type, size, and compression format. For others to decompress native StuffIt files, they'll either need the free StuffIt Expander utility or they'll be presented with a self-extracting archive, which adds to the overall file size. Fortunately, StuffIt also can compress in several other formats, including ZIP, TAR, and BinHex, though you won't get the added JPEG compression. Given its features, compression quality, and encryption options, StuffIt Standard stands up to WinZip in most areas. Digital-photo mavens may even prefer it.
