Publisher's description of Alien Arena 2007 6.05
From COR Entertainment:Alien Arena 2007 is a multiplayer online deathmatch game based on the GPL id source code. Powered by version 6.05 of the CRX engine, this game features incredibly smooth and fast game play with next-generation engine features such as shaders, real-time lighting and shadows, lensflars, light bloom and reflective water. The game includes 35 maps, eight weapons (with alt-fire modes), eleven player characters, mutaters, six game play modes, and an in-game server browser. Version 6.05 features new game mode "Cattle Prod".
Note: This is a very large (207MB) file and may take several hours to download via dial-up modem.

Version: Alien Arena 2007 6.05
Pros: First and foremost, the engine has been optimized, meaning that while I was pulling 40-50 fps in 6.04 with the settings down, I now get 80-90 fps, even with stuff like shaders, dynamic world shadows, dynamic and real time lighting on. I'll be honest, I was so used to my regular flat graphics that when I first turned all this other stuff on, I just stood there for ten minutes or so shooting at stuff and watching the lights from my gun play off the various objects in the game. There are also a few changes to the display: AA now supports custom HUDs and crosshairs, and there's also an optional minimap. We recently had two contests where members of the community made HUDs and crosshairs that are distributed with the game, and there's some very nice stuff in there. Third is the new game mode, Cattleprod. I might not have the most experience with FPS game, but I can say with some certainty that nobody has ever made a team game in which you corral space cattle in quasi-futuristic sci-fi environments. Teamwork is key: one person is dragging these cows along, while others are trying to prevent the cows and the cowboy/cowmartian/cowrobot from being shot, while still others are causing grief for the opposing team. There are also some smaller changes: some of the maps and weapons have gotten a cosmetic overhaul, and they all look very spiffy. Also, some of the weapons have been tweaked for better balance: the disruptor (it's like the railgun) is more powerful, the flamethrower has been nerfed a little (a person who was burned to death used to respawn on fire if they respawned too fast; now they don't), and the vaporizer alt-fire (lobbing powerful bombs) now only uses one unit of ammo instead of two.
Cons: The only thing I don't like is how I thought 6.04 was so awesome, and now 6.05 comes out and blows me away. Not cool, not cool at all.

Version: Alien Arena 2007 6.05
Pros: Great strides have been made improving Alien Arena this time around. Much better graphics through better textures, lighting, shadows, and maps make the game feel much more polished and professional. Gameplay is the same as it always has been and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Fast and furious deathmatch all the way. The community is alot bigger and still as nice as ever. The new cattle prod game mode is pretty cool too.. WITH COWS!!!
Cons: Not really much to complain about. There are some features that are in development that will make things alot nicer, but nothing really stands out as being wrong with this game in my mind.

Version: Alien Arena 2007 6.05
"Alien plus detahmatch...fun games"
Pros: As with this new 6.05 update, this game just keeps getting better and better, regardless of the other deathmatch shooters around it. Games like OpenArena (Huge new release) and Nexuiz gaining speed, Alien Arena still sticks around and delivers a very polished, fun gaming experience.
The biggest thing it delivers is the graphics. I will tell you now: my computer sucks bones. It can't run a whole lot. Alien Arena has such a great engine that it's stable, even on my knife's-edge-sensitive processor. And it looks really, really nice, with shadowing, water effects, lighting, you name it. It gets a huge 1up for having just so much in a good package that the game runs so well.
The gameplay itself is pretty fun. Quake meets Unreal Tournament, which is a little hard to get into because they're so similar in the first place, but you get the idea. You run around, shooting other players with weapons and stuff, picking up health, ammo, and power-ups. It's not horribly different or ground breaking, but it's a deathmatch shooter for free on the internet, what more can you want?
Does it hold up to retail games? Sure! Compare the game to Shadowrun, which is a game similar in concept, and while Shadowrun does have a few extra things to make the game better (like paid power-ups every round, etc.) it's nice to see that AA07 is still a good enough game to hold its own against the action, because the fighting is still essentially the same.
That said, it would have been nice to see a little bit of creativity in the gameplay design. There are a few new modes and maps, but when you get down to it the game is basically Unreal Tournament 2003 with a Sci-Fi Alien vibe. Adding in Shadowrun's bought items or Unreal 2004's more obscure ideas into a new release would have been great, especially considering the game has been in development for three years plus. There are some really neat things (like Assault mode, with new vehicles) but the game does strike me as conservative.
Cons: The User Interface is a little iffy and small, as other games like this (namely Nexuiz, shudder). The configuration is also a little confusing at first, and when I played a CTF game with bots I didn't quite know what was going on. It would also be a Teen rated game if rated by the ESRB for blood and violence.
But that's water under the bridge, the game is a fun, fast experience with a funny theme. Grab it now, I'm sure a new release will be along soon. It looks, handles, sounds, and plays awesome, and for 200 MB, how can you argue with that?

Version: Alien Arena 2007 6.05
Pros: Before I thought of anything I would fix in this game I came up with nothing. But there is now so many new features which astound me. You can choose from a large list of crosshairs and HUDs, I suggest terminal (Mine) haha. And now many new graphics settings were added and I though would never be able to handle them with my bad graphics card, all settings were improved, and I can have the game look amazing and still get some respectable FPS.
There is this new mode which is just awesome and so unique. It's cattle prod mode, it is awesome.
Best game community ever too. I was just re-learning to map and no matter how many stupid questions I asked everyone had the patients to answear them.
The new maps have such amazing detail of architecture, and attention to detail it is amazing.
Cons: The thought I was wrong that it couldn't get better.
