The new AltaVista toolbar is an add-on to the Internet Explorer browser for Windows and gives users direct access to the AltaVista search engine from the browser window. The new toolbar saves time and extends a user's search experience through unique, innovative features that include the ability to translate complete Web pages or individual phrases into 10 languages. Other popular features include a pop-up blocker, the ability to highlight (search terms), find (similar to CTRL-F but easier to use,) and shortcut lookups for weather, area codes, zip codes, time zones, and exchange rates. Add an AltaVista search toolbar to your Internet Explorer browser, but while this program adds quick links it gives users no new functionality. AltaVista Toolbar is a single search box and a few pre-configured buttons. The toolbar does bring many useful functions to the forefront of your browser, including page translation, site search, and various information lookups. All the toolbar functions default to searches on AltaVista or its parent company, Yahoo. For example, enter Largo, FL, and click Zip Code and the toolbar opens the AltaVista search box with the entry "largo, fl zip code." You could do that yourself by opening the AltaVista homepage, but the toolbar does save a few keystrokes. The toolbar does add a pop-up blocker, which is useful for those still using older versions of IE. You won't do any harm by adding this toolbar to IE, but AltaVista's search and lookup capabilities are not up to those of other search sites. All levels of user will find this toolbar easy to install, but more advanced users will probably look for a search toolbar with better results.

"Good but not the best"

Cons: Some of the other comments on here are good - Yahoo has the free anti-spy and both Google and Yahoo provide a better search experience.

"AltaVista Toolbar is an "okay" program, but there are much better ones."

Pros: I liked its pop-up blocker.

Cons: There are much better search engines out there that give excellent toolbars, the best being MSN (Windows Live Toolbar) and Yahoo, with its toolbar. Yahoo toolbar also comes with Anti-Spy, which is a useful tool against spyware.

"Don't Download It! It sucks!"

Cons: This program is terrible. Upon installing it my computer was plagued with furious popups that not one of my three popup blockers could keep down (I have the Google Toolbar, the Yahoo! Antispy Toolbar, Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition). Websites such as "qwikfind", "nester", "partypokeronline""heavy", and many more interrupted my programs and shut down my open windows. AVG Anti-Virus detected a trojan horse hidden as a temporary file. I would never recommend this program to anyone, not even if they paid me! I have always trusted CNET and their product reviews, but something was very wrong with the AltaVista toolbar. Besides my popup blockers I own and run Norton Anti-Virus, AOL Active Security Monitor, Spybot- Search & Destroy, Spyware Doctor, and Ewido Anti-spyware 4.0- I don't even need all those programs, but after what AltaVista did to my computer who can tell?
