Editor's review of Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate

  • "Powerful, flexible photo editor"

Despite a slightly annoying installation process, version X2 (read: 12) of Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo continues to offer the same high performance and full feature set of earlier editions. The digital image-editing program will fit the needs of many photographers and designers.

A well-designed and intuitive interface offers easy access to all of your digital images, and the individual components--such as tool selectors, palettes, and layer windows--can be dragged and dropped anywhere on the screen. Excellent one-click photo adjustments such as Smart Photo Fix or One Step Noise Removal will be godsends for photographers with busy schedules.

One of the most noticeable updates in X2 is the new graphite workspace theme, which gives the app a slick, 21st century look. A tabbed interface makes switching between photos a breeze, and the library organizer is available as either a palette tool or another tab in the image browser.

The organizer is one of the strongest features of Paint Shop Pro Photo, and a new Express Lab feature makes batch editing even easier. We did notice a CPU slowdown when using the organizer with large libraries, but otherwise the application was quite stable, even when editing very large BMP files. A new Learning Center provides contextual help for specific features, but we found searching the regular help topics to be more informative.

The installation is the most disappointing part of the trial. It requires registering for a free Corel account, which in turn requires a valid e-mail address. Adobe uses the same practice, but it's an annoying trend. You should also note that within the "Advanced" installation setting, Paint Shop Pro Photo is automatically set to become the default application for all your major image-file formats.

Once you get Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 installed and working on your machine, you'll find a very powerful photo editor and organizer that is quite easy to learn and use. A full 30-day trial gives you plenty of time to determine whether or not you'd like the full version.

    "An Editors Dream"

by corelpsplover on October 27, 2008

Pros: This product gives you nearly everything you need for a nice edit. Makeover tools, effects, adjustments, beams, text and brushes and more. I love it and the graphics are great when you save it right. Amazing

Cons: The only downfalls of PSP X2 Ultimate is the text. The text tool always goes a bit funny and only show the outline. The sizes dont work either. I would also get a multicoloured text tool like in fireworks.

Summary: All in all this product is a very proffesional and useful one. Better than photoshop in my opinion and easier to use. You can create almost anything and anyone can use it. The instructions aren't all that great so you may need to mess around with i... read more >>

"Spend time with it and grows on you fast"

by ctrue on October 22, 2008

Pros: Good tools to edit, enhance and restore photos. MediaOne helpful to organize, search and typical fixes for photos. (comes with paid version)

Cons: If a previous user of the Jasc it will be frustrating to become accustom to the new interface. Missing the Jasc Animation application. Terminology much different from Photoshop.

Summary: I have been able to . Tools I find useful are One Step Photo Fix, Smart Photo Fix, One Step Noise Removal, Digital Camera Noise Removal, Red Eye Removal, Object Remover, Color Changer, Makeover (Blemish removal, sun tan, teeth whitening), Fade Corr... read more >>

"jasc paintshop pro was easier to use"

    by paintpro1 on September 24, 2008

Pros: it has some advanced features

Cons: Having used jasc paint shop pro,I was disapointed, there is no animation shop, Photo X2 is frustrating to use. So much promise and so much disapointment, then the license agreement whereby Corel uses 'spyare' to monitor useage of their product!

    "Still has Spyware"

by MadLyb on September 18, 2008

Pros: Great product that I *had* used forever until Corel loaded with Spyware

    Cons: Spyware.

They log all actions in the application and even share with third parties and you have to consent to this to use the application.

    Why doesn't CNET flag this?

Summary: I'll let the EULA speak for itself.

You hereby acknowledge and consent to Corel:

    (a) monitoring your Use of the Product,
    (b) authenticating and periodically verifying your licensing rights in the Product,
