If you haven't already recognized its lightning-fast launch time, in comparison to similar software, then read the history of EmEditor at Emurasoft.
The reason that EmEditor is so fast lies in the developer's laser-focused attention to efficient design. His frustration with so many slow-to-start editors, and his experience-- "as part of the i486 microprocessor design group at Intel, Japan"-- inspired him to create EmEditor to function as a well-oiled, finely tuned machine.
* Do you code in PHP? JavaScript? Do you use PCRE Regular Expression syntax? If so, you totally NEED EmEditor. (e.g. wishing to remove all < a > tags, each enclosed in a < dt > elemt, after trying several Find / Replace features of countless editors (Win32 - XP), EmEditor was THE ONLY one which understood my PCRE expression, AND which output the backreferences PRECISELY as I had anticipated.

why?
I suspect that, soon, you will NOT be able to find it available as a completely functional software, free of charge-- as it has been my own fortunate discovery here today.

well, it's not the 'Pro' version. EmEditor Pro is all you should ever need in a text editor, but for the nominal price tag. Even the payware version is inexpensive when compared to leading contemporaries.

"One of few free editors with proper regex support"
Pros: EmEditor is one of very few free editors that has proper regular expression support. I've tried many (Notepad++, Programmer's Notepad, etc) but they all support only a very small subset of regex. (Is this due to their Scintilla core?)
Cons: There are no more links to the free edition on EmEditor's homepage, so this will probably be the last free version...
