  • "Down to the wire"

From its start as a post-Napster clone to its leading role as the quintessential Gnutella client, LimeWire has been one of the highest-profile P2P applications. The 4.0 series further ups the ante with a combination of new features, an updated interface, and better all-around performance.

On the surface, the refined and zippier Java interface houses some snazzy new icons and a few new features, including a connection-quality meter and a button matrix for zeroing in on specific file types. The search interface now sports a progress bar, and file information--such as artist and album--is more clearly displayed. The improved network performance gave us considerably more search results than previous versions and a more reliable downloading experience (for a P2P client, that is). This latest version also feels more nimble despite its inherently resource-heavy Java-based foundation. We like the What's New feature, which lists files recently added to the network. The check box to filter out adult content also is a nice touch.

The new features and overall functionality make this by far the most mature version of LimeWire to date. Despite the typical performance flaws found in all file-sharing clients, this latest version continues to offer solid performance and good looks across the board.

    "Great but..."

    by burning_soul56 on January 3, 2006

Pros: This program is great for finding your favorite MP3's.

Cons: However, it is very slow on downloading. Try Frostwire, which is another free program, based on Limewire(exactly the same except for the speed, availability of search options, and no remote filters). Frostwire is much better, even as a beta program. Besides, better than any of those, is the new Morpheus, with so much searching power, to find just about any type of file on the network of P2P users.

    "REGARDING LIMEWIRE "Pro""

by marcscastle on December 27, 2005

Pros: Decent download speeds, better versions as it time goes by and newer versions become available, I have used both versions and am overall satisfied for the most part. It has a better interface than some of the other versions which I tried in the past , Kazaa, Bearshare, morpheus, etc,

Cons: When it comes to the free version I don't really have any complaints, I am not sure if these problems apply to the free version to be fair, I noticed in the last few versions of Limewire that there is a quirk or a redesigning, I am not sure why and I am not alone but, if you type in a bunch a songs etc, to download and they are in your queue and you walk away for a while it will disconnect, and you will notice that a popup will say that " It appears your machine doesn't appear to have an active connection, so don't go to the movies and come back and expect it all to be done, most of the time it will say, " more sources needed" or it'll stop halfway, I don't know why it does this, It's kind of frustrating seeing you can't rely it to do many in a row, A few other things, It isn't a "ONE TIME PAYMENT" for limewire pro, like the website says, It says under the FAQ'S that this is a one time payment, this isn't accurate , I saw they had a newer version, 4:10 I think, and I went to download it seeing that I thought I paid the onetime payment of $18.88? not sure exact amount, Well that so called "One Time Payment" is for only 6 months ! You will have to " repurchase it a discount , $14.50, you only get free updates for 6 months, You may continue to use your current version, but you have to pay after 6 months for the latest version, You cannot have more than one version on your computer, the new download will overwrite the old, Last , the program like a few people mentioned, is written in JAVA, Java cripples computers and generally runs slow no matter where you use it, it's a good program but Java uses almost all your resources, try not to have other things running at the same time, tandem, like a virus scan, webpage, it can disconnect it, and don't go too far , , I think if it senses your not active it will disconnect, I have braodband , too. LOL Enjoy but keep these things in mind, I found out the hard way, :+)

"I always fear posting reviews in the p2p section, but I just had to try this app"

    by lapointe34 on January 19, 2006

Pros: Search is quicker, faster downloads. A lot less viriis, but more spyware :(

but very rare because you can tell the difference between a legit file and a virii

Cons: A search engine that was confusing until I got used to it. Pressuring ppl to buy pro, well, I don't want an FBI swat to invade my house because limewire knows my credit card..., As I said, I favour apps like Itunes but. This one stadns out from p2p

"LimeWire still the king of P2P!"

    by lil_ddude on January 8, 2006

Pros: Ive been using LimeWire for years now and theres a reason that its the most popular! Its the ONLY truly spyware/adware free program! The install does take time, but its clean and easy. The downloads are decently fast and a great variety of files. The gnutella network is great and boosts LimeWires searches with 100's of results. The new LimeWire 4.10 has a really cool Junk filter which actually works! In all the other programs the junk filter doesent work at all! But in this one if you see a search result that is 'Junk' then mark it as junk and then LimeWire remembers what you think is junk and whats not. The more you mark Junk the better it works. So its you teaching the Junk filter how it works. If your looking for a great P2P download this!

"Sorry Limewire, the P2P world don't want you anymore."

by The Hound on January 20, 2006

Pros: Fairly logical search results for a P2P client. Cute interface, especially on Pro(have had Pro a long time until now).

Cons: Limewire is working on censoring the P2P market and all versions past 4.9 have a backdoor for them to implement this. Privacy has always been an issue unless you turn browse host ability off. Broadcasts your IP address and even encourages you to give it to friends. Alot of P2P clients have this issue, but Limewire will scan your pc in the future to filter your content. Just as the product got clean of bundled spyware, they made the app itself spyware. If you choose to download this, I'd regularly scan your pc for viruses as this does run in Java and use a proxy. By the way, the firewall to firewall transfer works with few routers and cannot bypass isp blocks, so it's almost worthless. This client does tend to break off during downloads, but possibly protocol issues since all my clients use different networks. Better connectivity with Frostwire than even Pro version of Limewire with no backdoor or spyware of any kind. It's also free and has a blue version of Limewire's interface, though still scan because it runs in Java also. It has vowed not to filter content. Download that.
