Editor's review of LimeWire 4.14.8

  • 4.0 stars

  • "Down to the wire"

From its start as a post-Napster clone to its leading role as the quintessential Gnutella client, LimeWire has been one of the highest-profile P2P applications. The 4.0 series further ups the ante with a combination of new features, an updated interface, and better all-around performance.

On the surface, the refined and zippier Java interface houses some snazzy new icons and a few new features, including a connection-quality meter and a button matrix for zeroing in on specific file types. The search interface now sports a progress bar, and file information--such as artist and album--is more clearly displayed. The improved network performance gave us considerably more search results than previous versions and a more reliable downloading experience (for a P2P client, that is). This latest version also feels more nimble despite its inherently resource-heavy Java-based foundation. We like the What's New feature, which lists files recently added to the network. The check box to filter out adult content also is a nice touch.

The new features and overall functionality make this by far the most mature version of LimeWire to date. Despite the typical performance flaws found in all file-sharing clients, this latest version continues to offer solid performance and good looks across the board.

    Version: LimeWire 4.14.8

"Fastest version of LimeWire, ever! Spware and adware free!"

by goldengreeke on August 24, 2007

Pros: Six Seconds to download a song! That is a new record for me. I picked a smooth jazz tune by Kenny G, chose a host with a T-3 connection, out of Dozens of search results, and it was downloaded in my music library in six seconds. For you newbies, always try to download from a host with a T-3 connection, it is the fastest, followed by T-1, cable, DSL, and Dialup. You will see all of the hosts after you type in what you wanted and click "search" When you first install LimeWire, it will install Java for you, which is a good thing, you need it to view certain items on web pages, and are missing out if you don't have it on your pc.Then your firewall will prompt you to allow or block, and you chose "allow", LimeWire will also ask if you want to check the box to filter out all the copyrighted songs. If you check this box, you will get very, very, few search results...but it will be all legal material you are getting. If you don't check it, you will get ALL the stuff you want, but you will also be breaking the law if you download copyrighted music. I still believe it is sharing and not stealing music, but only you can make that decission. is there a risk in downloading copyrighted material? Well, I guess the FBI could come knocking on your door and fine you and throw you in jail, but the odds of that happening are about as good as hitting the Mega Million Lotery. Anyway, I have rambled on enough, I am going to sit back, sip some Crown Royal on the rocks, and listen to my Kenny G smooth jazz.

Cons: Still my favorite for downloading music, no other p2p application can top it, but not as good at finding software products as in years past in the older versions of LimeWire.

""Limewire" was alyways my favorite P2P program."

    by Chainmail2006 on August 25, 2007

Pros: Shoot, 80% of all my music and movies are files I downloaded with "Limewire Pro", then burned ti a disk. Needless to say, I've been waiting for this release because I was expecting a "Vista" compatible version. No such luck yet. I looked everywhere for a "Vista" version, located a beta release for "Vista", installed it and it changed my theme to "Vista" basic and never located a single file to download. If I wanted basic, I would have stayed with "XP". I can't knock this application for those who still have "XP" but if you are running "Vista" there is only one solid choice, "MP3 Rocket".

    Cons: See pros:

"5 Stars for XP users...Zero stars if you are running Vista"

    by merlot_1 on August 26, 2007

Pros: BUGS< BUGS< BUGS!!!! Won't even load on my Vista. HTLM engine freezes at 12 percent and LimeWire Interface is frozen to your screen and won't let you exit out. Get with it LimeWire, take a clue from your clone, MP3 Rocket and FrostWire! Clean up the bugs for the Vista users! LimeWire still works fantastic on earlier Windows versions, and I have faith that LimeWire will clear these bugs up soon.

"Are you going to get a version for Viista"

    by EYE_test_software on August 30, 2007

Pros: I'm giving you 4 stars because you are still the king of the P2P apps, but you lose your 5th star until you come out with a version for Vista....or haven't you heard it's out yet?? It's not that hard to build a Vista version if you remain sober while doing it, lol!
