Publisher's description of OpenOffice.org 2.0.4
OpenOffice.org is both an open-source product and a project. The product is a multiplatform office productivity suite. It includes desktop applications such as a word processor, a spreadsheet program, a presentation manager, and a drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to those of other office suites. OpenOffice.org also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office.
Localizations of OpenOffice.org are available in 27 languages, with more being constantly added by the community. OpenOffice.org runs on Solaris, Linux (including PPC Linux), and Windows. Written in C++ and with documented APIs licensed under the LGPL and SISSL open-source protocols, OpenOffice.org allows any knowledgeable developer to benefit from the source. Among other new features, bugfixes, and improvementsm, version 2.0.4 adds enhanced PDF management, direct export to LaTex, and new functionality in Calc and Impress. The most notable advancement is improved extensions management that allows developers to create their own extensions for the open-source suite.

- "Get productivity for free"
An increasingly credible rival to MS Office, OpenOffice.org includes powerful applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, and databases, as well as HTML and XML documents. Not only does it let you edit basic documents, such as letters and faxes, it also handles complex and multipart documents with bibliographies, reference tables, and indexes.
The interface is similar to that of MS Office users, and even advanced Office users will find almost everything they're used to: templates, collaborative features (versions, recording changes), macros, and even a programming language. OpenOffice.org lets you open and save documents in formats as diverse as MS Office, PDF, HTML, and XML. However, it normally saves files in the open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML format, for maximum compatibility with other applications. We were pleased to find that stability has improved too. No doubt about it, OpenOffice.org is a compelling option for anyone in search of an alternative office suite.

Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4
"Five stars from a former MS Office user."
Pros: I used MS Office for years, and still have to use it at work, but I now prefer OpenOffice, and use it on my own computer. Its cost advantage is impossible to ignore, but I already had Office 2003 Pro, so that wasn't the only factor.
I save most of my work to ODF, which MS Office doesn't support. I also like OOo's ability to export to PDF, complete with bookmarks, links, and form elements. (PDF "printer" plugins only produce what can be printed on a page.) When I do need to share files with MS Office users, I have been able to do so without problem, as OOo does a good job of saving to DOC, XLS, and PPT file formats.
The learning curve is pretty short. If you've used Office, Works, or WordPerfect, it won't take long to get used to OpenOffice's interface. The help files are good, and there are some good PDF user guides on the OOo website.
OpenOffice has been rock-solid on my PC, and has been crash-resistant and trouble-free. Anyone looking for a good office software bundle would do well to try out OOo before spending money on something else.
Cons: PC novices won't find OOo as friendly as MS OFfice or Works. There are few templates included, and no "wizards" to speak of.

Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4
"What Firefox did to Internet Explorer, this might do the same to MS Office!"
Pros: OpenOffice.org, I can't think of words to describe it. There are many features that one wouldn't find in a commercial release of MS Office e.g exporting to PDF, and now to LaTex. In addition, giving programmers out there more control over the file formas being read. This is a worthy replacement for most of the tasks that Office would do. Best part is that it's free. Disk space usage is small compared to MS Office.
Cons: Although every version tries to catch up with MS Office, it's still behind in some features. Office has speech and handwriting, and these can help accelerate adoption of such an open-source alternative, especially when there is a big market of Tablet PC users. It doesn't read Access database files. There should be more templates, and hopefully a starter kit to help create new ones. Formulas for Calc are in small number, compared to Excel.

Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4
Pros: It's free, as opposed to MS Office. You can download as many components as you want (not all or nothing). Any document made in Open Office can be saved as Word Document. Why pay hundreds of dollars for something when you can get something that's just as good for free?

Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4
Pros: I am not on who needs the use of an office suite program, which makes this review a little different for me! In my household, I am the computer geek. Day in & day out, my mother-in-law has to call me to fix some sort of issue that she is having with her Microsoft Office program. Never fails that Microsoft always has some sort of issue going on that affects its users, and its Office software is no exception!
As to the general use of Open Office, I did
use it so that I could post this review. Well, I still find it difficult to use because of the fact I am new to Office Suites, but I can say that it is much easier to use than Microsoft! Furthermore, I don't experience all of the technical difficulties with this program, unlike my mother-in-law's Microsoft Office.
Cons: There is one noticeable thing to me that, in my opinion, keeps the Microsoft software in service ~ Open Office doesn't have a mail client in its suite!
This will be a BOLD statement, but if Sunmicrosystems puts a mail client into its
software ~ Microsoft Office will be in trouble! FURTHERMORE, if they would put a safe web browser to rival Microsoft Outlook
~ such as FireFox or Opera ~ Microsoft Office would be another of the dying parasitic products they provide "The Poor Ol` Cash Paying Customer!"

Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4
Pros: It REALLY is amazing what this suite has to offer. What surprises me the most is that its ALL FREE. This suite is very similar to the Microsoft office suite. I even think that it is better ,mainly because it has some features that i have not seen in the Microsoft suite. If you are looking for a suite then i can Guarantee you this is the best suite out there. Its something New and im sure in the future It will become a very popular program. I can assure you , will not be disappointed with this suite. (extremely surprised why such a program is free)?
