  • "Slash your long-distance bills"
Getting in touch with friends and family is easy with this Internet telephone software, but the functionality is conditional. Skype offers a graphically pleasing interface that's much like a chat program. To make calls, you'll need to create a contact list of friends and family or use the phone-like interface to dial people directly. You also can access a pull-down menu for painless conference calls of up to four people. To make free calls, both parties will need to have the Skype software installed. To call regular phones, you'll need to sign up for a plan with SkypeOut, the developer's paid service that offers cheap by-the-minute calling. We like the intuitive chat-like interface of Skype and we were surprised at the excellent sound quality, even with regular desktop speakers. Similar to a chat client, you can set your availability status, but we also would like to see a missed call indicator or, better yet, some form of voice mail. Overall, we think Skype is a strong contender in the Internet Telephony category, and anyone who's interested in talking for free should give it a try. For international callers who have computers, this program is a no-brainer solution for long-distance bills.

"Awesome program ... almost become a daily thing for me to talk my friends!"

    by kumar_chheda on June 29, 2005

Pros: I have used regular skype - the pc to pc chat.. and I can tell you its awesome. I chat to my friends and family for hours. It works consistently and is awesome. I havent tried skypeOut - their paid program to make phone calls onto regular phones. But considering that their free part is so good, I bet that skypeOut must be awesome too. But all in all its awesome if you get it configured properly and also have a few friends all over the world (or even within the US) with broadband internet

Cons: the cons is that some people with AVG antivirus are not being able to connect to / make skype phone calls. Also the list has problems showing accurate info sometimes. My friends have logged out at times and it still showed them online and I sat there in vain trying to call them. All in all its a great program and I think its cons are highly shadowed by its awesome pros. In fact I hope that the cons will also be worked out soon and then there will be none :)

    "Insanely Great IP-telephony :-)"

by jimoksvold on June 14, 2005

Pros: If you have a decent broadband then this is for you. I myself have 10Mbit/s Ethernet (T3) at home

and my first conversation was from Oslo to Tokyo. Sound quality was the best ever.

I used Skype out to book a hotel room in Germany and it worked just fine.

I saved at least 5 EUROs on that call alone :-)

If you and your girlfriend has good broadband then this is THE solution to stay connected - Period. Skype out works too, but the sound is just like ordinary telephone calls at best. Worth a try at 10 EUROs calltime prepaid.

Cons: It does need like 300 k of bitstream to work well in Windows - Both directions that is - A real bandwidth hog :-) - Anything less and things don't work so well.

Skype for Linux is still tricky but help is under way.

    "just plain awesome"

by tripro on June 14, 2005

Pros: Crystal clear calls (often better than land line quality), cool conferencing feature, easy to install, easy to use, the call logs are detailed, easy to use voicemail, low cost skypeout calls. The SkypeIn service is very reasonably priced and works well. Really like the fact that I can take my laptop anywhere and as long as I have internet access, I can place and receive calls whereever I am at the time. Having phone numbers in other parts of the country lets me talk with friends, family and business associates and save them (and me) money. I try to use Skype as much as I can just for the ease of the voicemail system. The files load quickly (as opposed to other service that make you download messages manually in large, bulky formats). Very impressed and happy Skype user!

Cons: Can't change the default voicemail greeting, but can use other software (like Hotrecorder) for custom VM greetings. Support is slow (email) but the forums are a great resource.

"Needs alot of work to bring it up to scratch"

    by _BA|LEY_ on June 13, 2005

    Pros: Its free

    and its better then nothing

Cons: It breaks up alot, had alot of static noise, Has huge lags at times, Hangs up alot. Slows down your computer alot - if you are on dial up or DSL your computer runs like its dead when you have a call going. Comes up with alot of violations and wont let you use it - you need to log off then back on for it to work again and that it self is a pain as it takes forever to load.

Needs alot work....yet skype tells you that its in its trial period, that there are errors ect. So when you download sykpe you know what your in for.

    "A must have"

    by j2k on June 12, 2005

Pros: Sound quality is superb! I use it all the time to talk to friends that have ADSL. It works well even on slow connections like ISDN.

Cons: It is not as popular as ICQ.
