Version: UseNeXT 4.05
"95 euros for no working product and no support"
Cons: I recently signed up to a 14-day trial subscription of UseNext, and I think the company are treating me (and other trialers?) extremely unfairly, although what they're doing isn't illegal, just a nice little earner for them.
Once I'd signed up I couldn't successfully download any files. They started downloading, then would freeze, or go to one or two bytes per second and then crash a few hours later. I ended up with a hard drive full or half-transferred corrupted files. I tried to ring Usenet on their customer support number (in Germany), but every time there was a recorded message saying their operators were busy.
So I cancelled at the end of the trial period - although I wanted to use the service and would have paid a monthly charge if I'd had the help to use it.
OK, I should have cancelled on day 14 after not getting any help rather than keep trying up to the end and then cancel when I'd had no luck, but I was still trying up to then to get through. I did cancel though on day 15, then got an email saying as it was outside the trial period I would still be charged. Not for a monthly contract even, but for a full year - Euro 95.35. As far as I can see they don't even advertise these 12-month contracts on their website!
Then when I tried to reply to their email, the message was bounced back saying that email address no longer existed.
The icing on the cake is when I did finally get a reply from them, having to go through their web form, filling in all the fields etc., first they cited the terms and conditions then asked if I'd like to cancel at the end of January 2008! I HAD ALREADY CANCELLED!!
I have gone back to their website and offered to pay for the two weeks, just to get this sorted, and to ask for an email address I can contact them on. No reply. So, no reply, no support, no product, but 95 euros to them.
If they do get back to me to try to sort this out, I'll let you know.
Until then, potential future customers, BEWARE!

Version: UseNeXT 4.05
Pros: Access to some good files with faster speeds than P2P. Interface is extremely user-friendly, finding files and browsing pictures couldn't be more fun. Program itself is stable and runs flawlessly, even on Windows Vista.
A generous trial offer through Paypal allows a nice 3gb of data to be downloaded at their maximum speeds. You can forgive them for charging 1 Euro for their free trial since it's more than worth it in any case.
Cons: Service itself is confusing and probably on purpose in order to hide from its customers some facts that may deter them from the service. Prices for different packages are both confusing and steep (prices exclude VAT and must be paid months in advance).
What I believe results in the way this service is a scam is that during the trial period, I was impressed with the download speeds which easily reached and stayed at my Internet cap of 1mb. However, when switching from the trial package to the full-package, I noticed a significant drop in performance, down to approximately 400-500kbps. It seems to me as though they purposefully offer a faster service to trial users in order to drag them into their premium service which carries a hefty price tag.
I could only possibly recommend this as an alternative to obtaining music, movies and warez only if your firewall forbids you from using P2P software like Bittorrent. Otherwise, it's just not worth paying for considering that Bittorrent is free and although has slower download speeds, has a much wider choice of downloads than Usenet servers.

"Incomplete uninstaller, otherwise pretty good."
Pros: Simple interface ***** Decent download speed ***** Nice tabbed browsing ***** Mind you, I only used it for about two hours, was searching for a specific file, so this isn't a thorough review.
Cons: Two separate username/password combos for the same service (one for the software, one for the website) - both randomly generated, thus hard to remember. ***** Welcome e-mails aren't as clear as they could be re: the order in which you get all your access information and when you can begin to download or even connect to the server. ***** INCOMPLETE UNINSTALLER - I presume this program hooks into the registry somehow and I haven't worked out which entry it is yet, but the program cannot be uninstalled automatically (from Add/Remove Programs), nor can you run it manually by opening the uninstall exe - it says that a .dat file is missing.

Version: UseNeXT 4.05
Pros: Download speeds are fast. For users who don't want to wade through setting up a Newsreader, this might be a good option. I easily installed and downloaded a fairly large file in a short amount of time. The download speeds were the same as those I experience using Giganews with UseNetExplorer.
Cons: The login for your user account at the web site is different that the login for the UseNext software -- we all have enough of logins already without having 2 logins/passwords for 1 service.
While the download speed was good, header downloads were sluggish, much slower than my other service. Fine if you want just recent headers, but painfully slow if you select to 'download all' headers.
While I had lots of headers downloaded, the search function turned up no results no matter what I typed. Maybe I'm not using it right...?

Pros: After posting here on download a bad review of my first impression with usenext (11/2005), i have to change my opinion. First, my credit card never was charged more than than my chosen plan. 2- my problem with them, that i was charged multiple times for the trial $1 via paypal, was remedied that same day. The $1 was charged and i was able to download. In almost half hour i was browsing and downloading as a maniac...i ate my 3gb trial in a few hours. The software client is great, very easy to use, and the downloads, even on the free rate, are enough fast (faster with a click and the program changes to wicked fast downloads). I cannot compare usenext with others services...what i can say is, at my very own point of view, usenext is a great service after 1 year using it and at the moment i'm not planning change it. If you wanna try the service i recommend just deposit $1 euro to your paypal account and that usenext take it from there, and not from your credit card. Don't be fooled by other people telling that usenext don't have enough newsgroups as others, etc. I made a quick visit to around 6 usenet providers and have practically the same newsgroups, at least the most populars, and of course, all those who have tons of files (audios, videos & more).
Cons: A bit difficult to search for something specific. Sometimes for some search appears 100 or 200 options, and search on every one is a bit time consuming.
