Publisher's description of WinPatrol 9.8

From BillP Studios:

WinPatrol sniffs out worms, adware, keyloggers, spyware, cookies, and Trojan horses. This program puts you back in control of your computer with no need for constant updates. WinPatrol's goal is to help you better understand what programs are running on your computer and to alert you to any new programs added without your permission. Unlike traditional security programs, WinPatrol doesn't scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats. Instead, it uses a heuristic approach, taking a snapshot of your critical system resources, then alerting you to any changes that occur without your knowledge.

Version 9.8 adds additional undocumented Startup registry entries and improves cookie management.

  • "Antispyware watchdog bares its teeth"
This program uses a simple yet effective method of fighting all kinds of malicious programs. It inspects several spots in the Windows system malware is most likely to alter, including programs launched at start-up, browser helper objects, scheduled tasks, services, and cookies. WinPatrol consumes few resources and doesn't slow your PC. You can set the interval between checkups; the default is every three minutes. If something new installs on your PC, the program notifies you and asks whether you want the newcomer. This won't cure serious infections, but it will save you from annoying adware and malicious sites that hijack your browser home page. You can view full reports in HTML format, and the app even lets you manage which programs launch on system start-up. Improved cookie handling is taken care of by Pinky the Squirrel, who eats "cookies with nuts"--that is, cookies that contain user-defined nuggets of text, such as ads. Users who install a lot of new software will find the program invaluable.

    "Would not be without it"

by damianww on November 16, 2005

Pros: Everything !! WinPatrol Plus is THE one piece of software i would NOT be without. I have had it installed for some time now & it has 'rescued' me many a time..i.e by 'advising' me details of just about any software available. The vendors of WinPatrol are especially accomodating & have an excellent customer relationship style. I wholeheartdly recommend this software to those who are not internet savvy or are starting out surfing & downloading. Call me goofy but i feel extra secure to see Scotty loading up whenever i log on.

    Luv my Scotty !!

    Cons: None!

    "Good program"

    by srdjan1977 on November 20, 2005

Pros: Good program, get back control to your hands. Little slower then TeaTime from Spybot, but there is much better way to describe what are you doing and accepting. Really great control for your PC.

If you are just new to computers, maybe you need to pay for liecence. But, for someone who is little experinced (Mmm... I count myself in that group, maybe i'm wrong...) it's not needed.

In any way, everyone need to have this.

And yes, this is not spyware remover. But, it's great protection program. There are ways to pass that protection, but hey... Nothing is perfect... :(

Cons: Little slow, but nothing important...

    "Won't be without Winpatrol."

by CdixonM on November 27, 2005

Pros: Totally reliable. Even caught the SONY ROOTKIT trying to load--know of anything else that will catch a rootkit and allow you to stop it? It does not slow my system, and it does not need to scan. It just lets you know if any programs are up to monkey business. Highly recommend the PLUS version--there are very few obscure files that I haven't found a description for.

Cons: I really don't have any cons.
