Editor's review

Atlanta is a hip-hop destination these days, but that wasn't always true. Local DJ Greg Street has had a big hand in empowering the now-critical local scene. At Street's core is serious musical taste, and in this Nappy Roots collab we get a bouncy groove that's both clever and uniquely positive.

Biography

As one of the most recognizable voices in radio and the man behind the phrase "Its 6 o'clock, its 6 o'clock, time for Greg Street to Rock," Greg Street is the true voice of the people. Having first began his career at WORV-WJMG located in his hometown of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he was known as Gregory K.P., he quickly advanced as a well-known and respected DJ.  Seeking out opportunities to become more hands on, he would later move to WHSY and continue the task of working nightclubs and parties all while creating, producing, and distributing his own Gregory K.P. mix tapes on the road and through the legendary down south record store, JJ's record mart.

Continuing with his deep love and passion for radio would eventually take Greg Street from Mississippi to Alabama's WBLX 93 BLX, Houston's Magic 102/KMJQ (where he became MC Greg Street), Dallas's K-104/KKDA, to finally landing in Atlanta at V103. He became a fast sensation known for his ability to mix and bring a new and fresh outlook to music. After a little over 6 years at V103, Street would take up an offer from the Dallas Market and head back to K-104. Unwilling to totally leave what he has built in the Atlanta market, Greg Street continued to work with V103 through a 6 o'clock slot on Saturday, that brought him from Dallas to Atlanta every weekend. Now less than 5 years later he is the man synonymous with the Atlanta radio movement and nightlife, making Atlanta the true home for Greg Street.

As a music industry veteran, who takes his job seriously and offers opportunity to new artists, Greg Street has had an active hand in breaking some of today's biggest artists in Hip Hop and R&B. He has been inspirational in the careers in some of our biggest Hip Hop and R&B artists, producers and writers including: Rich Boy, 50 Cent, Outkast, Rick Ross, Mary J. Blige, Puffy, T.I., Trina, Plies, Jazze Pha, Ciara, Akon, Rick Ross, 8 Ball & MJG, Soulja Boy, Ying Yang Twins, Master P, Lil Wayne, Baby, Dj Khaled, Monica, Bow Wow, Keri Hilson, Chris Brown, Erykah Badu, Lil Jon, Polow and many more.  In the past Street has also won numerous awards and worthwhile recognitions for his strong influence that include: two nominations for Billboard's Major Market Personality of the Year, NBPC Major Market Personality of the Year in 1997 and 1999, and he successfully became the first recipient of the Think B.I.G. Heart Award from the Christopher "Notorious B.I.G. Wallace Memorial Foundation.

Besides his accomplishments and awards in radio, Greg Street is also active in a number of charities, events, and foundations.  As someone who recognizes his stardom as away to influence others, this activist for the people, has had the honor of partnering with Mayor Shirley Franklin's organization to help benefit Atlanta's youth. Taking on the role of  a mentor by actively speaking to children about the importance of staying in school and away from drugs, he has occasionally enlisted the help of a number of celebrity friends, making him instrumental in bringing a number of well-known artists to speaking engagements for children.   This type of work has lead Greg Street to create the Street Academy/Operation Correct Start, which focuses on teaching young boys how to become men and to avoid negative situations of the streets.  His other community project, The Street Academy, which has taken inner city kids to Church, College campuses, the White House and to numerous home games for Atlanta's pro sports teams for the last ten years, has also become a pride of joy for this trendsetting radio personality. In keeping with his legacy for commitment through community enrichment, Greg Street has further progressed his community involvement through the Greg Street Scholarship Foundation, which actively offers deserving students the opportunity to attend college.

Recently successful in branching off into other entities that heavily mix with the entertainment field, Greg Street has opened avenues for listeners and the public to enjoy some of his favorite past times that include, the sneaker culture and auto industry. Founded in 2004, in Dallas, TX the "Greg Street Car & Bike Tour" which has in recent years moved to the cities of Atlanta, Savannah, Mobile, Augusta, Macon, and Miami; has become a must attend event for the people.  With the first show attracting a crowd of more than 13,000 people, it's success, which now pulls in stadium size crowds, has propelled Greg Street to the forefront of the music/automobile industry. Also sharing his big passion for sneakers, in 2006 Greg Street introduced Atlanta to a new community & brand he has come to refer to as the Sneaker Friends.  A true collector, even Nike has made him a few pair of one of one sneakers, Sneaker Friends 08 was truly amazing as it showcased some of today's most classic and well sought after designs at the Atlanta Fox Theatre. Keep up with Greg Street's passion for sneakers online at theshoegame.com or v103webmagm.com.

Currently gearing up for his 14th year on Atlanta radio and firmly continuing to hold on to the #1 Rated Arbitron spot in all demographics, Greg Street is certainly the man to watch. With up incoming projects that include the release of a documentary entitled, "How We Did It: The Movie," from his film company, the project will feature some of the biggest names in Hip Hop including: Pharrell, T.I., Outkast, Ludacris, Jermaine Dupri, Swizz Beatz, Lil Jon, David Banner, Jazze Pha, Baby, Trick Daddy, Rick Ross and more.  Also in line for 2008 is the Interscope Records scheduled release of his up incoming album entitled "Certified Worldwide".  With plans to impact this industry in major ways and continue to take his audience along for the ride, Greg Street steadily proves why he is the true voice of the people, in more ways than one.
