The lone residents of Brooklynati follow up on their impressive full-length debut, "Moonlighting," with more tasty mixing of classic breaks and big-hearted rhymes. The Casio cool of retro-style track "How Low" is, like most things from the '80s, extra entertaining.
Who Is Tanya Morgan?
Let's make a few things clear. First of all, Tanya Morgan is not a female of any sorts. They are actually a rap group. Furthermore, this motley crew is made up of 3 members – 2 from Cincinnati (That'd be Donwill and Ilyas) and one from Brooklyn (that'd be Von Pea). This trio, much like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and Little Brother before them, has put out a critically acclaimed debut LP. Theirs was called Moonlighting and it received a 3.5 mic rating from The Source, praise in XXL's Chairman's Choice column, made Questlove's list of Top 10 albums of 2006, and was a favorite of Wax Poetics Magazine.
As a prelude to the 13-song underground classic that has become Moonlighting, Tanya Morgan released a mixtape, Sunlighting (a clever play on their own LP's title) and an EP, Sunset, which helped raise awareness about the group and received regular rotation on college radio. While Sunlighting was a mixtape in the most traditional sense of the word, Sunset featured original production from group member Von Pea and Cincinnati-based collaborator Brickbeats who also produced half of the Moonlighting LP.
What else should you know? Probably that Tanya Morgan has wowed fans with their high-energy shows on two US tours since their debut dropped. Perhaps you should know that they've performed with Ghostface Killah, Noveau Riche, Large Professor, Consequence and a long list of others. Also that their music video for "We Be" was featured on programs like MTVU, MTV Jams, Much Music and more. They are also the winners of MySpace Music & XM Radio's 'Show Us What Ya Got' competition and are regulars at New York's CMJ Festival.
Most importantly though, you should know that the three-man team that is Tanya Morgan is setting up to release their sophomore trilogy of Mixtape (Tanya Morgan Is A Rap Group, mixed by DJ Soul), EP (The Bridge) and LP (Brooklynati) in 2008. With a tour planned for summer and projects arriving in the heart of 2008, TM is set to join the ranks of other sophomore phenoms like Lupe Fiasco and The Fugees, establishing themselves as mainstays in hip hop.
